When we see someone on the side of the street, in need, do you - TopicsExpress

When we see someone on the side of the street, in need, do you think Ive got mine, and walk on? Or do you help them? This was the story of the Good Samaritan, a parable told by Jesus to illustrate what the requirements of a good life were. Jesus, being unimaginative, omitted a third possible option, which is that you make an oppressive system of laws targeted at people on the side of the road and instruct the gendarmes to go and further contribute to their indignities and suffering by removing what few possessions they have. Remember, people: this is the result of choices we have made, as a society. We decided to do this. We decided that we would foster individual achievement and neglect our obligations to be social creatures. We decided that some people deserve to starve to death, and freeze in the winter, and that rather than be helped, they are to be despised, for failing in some way to live up to impossible standards set by a rapacious culture of self-involvement. Congratulations, western civilisation! Congratulations Christendom! This is what you have become! Take a long hard look at yourself. Breathe it in. Enjoy it. Its all yours!
