When we sit in the comfort of our offices as Government officials - TopicsExpress

When we sit in the comfort of our offices as Government officials and do not visit communities, a lot can really go wrong in Government funded projects. It is also not enough to pour money on projects and not follow-up and monitor progress. Ongoing project support development is necessary. During the Legislature sitting, we learnt that expensive imported equipment lies idle for manufacturing plastic pipes because no one knows how to assemble it in the community. A Stove responsible for producing rusks and biscuits lies broken at Masizame Bakery in Steynsberg and the person responsible for fixing it is based in Cradock so the project stalls. Members of the community illegally occupy a hospital and erect informal housing structures because the hospital is unfenced. Qualified Bursary holders through the Funda Lushaka scheme are not employed upon qualifying as teachers and yet the State has trained them. Male and female nurses share bathroom facilities and toilets in a nursing home. Absence of school furniture and scholar learner transport remains a challenge when scholars have to walk long distances which impact on the ability of learners and educators to stay at school to learn and teach. Classrooms utilised as offices, lack of electricity, proper sanitation and water in schools. A Principal who has not been paid for 7 months and an educator loaned money by the school who went to Gauteng without paying back the money. These are some of the Governance, Admin and Leadership challenges communities face. Government pours money year in year out, no financial statements produced due to a lack of know how and few project managers. We need to be hands on as Government officials and visit communities frequently to assist and build capacity on the ground for people to manage their own affairs at local level where the challenges are. #Burgersdorp Reflections#
