When we were first married, we had a wood range and wood furnace, no running water ( it had to be carried 100 yards to the house from a well ), no fridge, no freezer, no bathroom, ( just an outdoors wooden one ), a wringer washer, a manual cream separator, and no TV or dryer. Part of the day was spent carrying water to the house, carrying wood in and ashes out. Washing up was done in a basin in the kitchen sink and baths were in a galvanized tub once a week. The water had to be carried in and heated on the stove. One needed lots of energy to carry pails and pails of water to put in the boiler on the stove on Sunday night to heat for washing clothes. Saturdays meant that extra water also had to be brought in for baths. Lighting the cookstove was necessary to heat the water. A chamber pot was used for evenings when one didnt want to go out to use the outhouse, so that had to be emptied regularly and washed. :( When my first two were born, diapers required lots of water and daily washings, so more water had to be carried in and heated. Flannelette diapers and nighties, which I sewed myself, were used. No Pampers. We milked cows, so the cream separator had to be washed twice a day. No need to go for walks to maintain fitness then. I got my exercise just carrying water, never mind, housework, cooking, gardening etc… Many talk about the good old days. I never do call them that! Although there are wonderful memories from the past, there are many things I do not miss... except perhaps being skinny from all those trips to and from the well!
