When you see the difference between the ideal held by 92% of Americans and the reality of the 1%, I hope you are as jolted as I was. What people think they know about inequality is all wrong; the 1% don’t just have more, they have effectively stolen the resources of an entire nation and put them to their own uses, even if that “use” is to sit and keep a banker’s heart warm on a balance sheet. THIS is the reality of the “American dream” unfettered by a social consciousness and fuelled by the “greed is good” ideology, and the proof that individual success does not necessarily make for a successful society. Sure, the very wealthiest could be counted “successful,” but they live in a system which fails to distribute resources to the vast majority of its participants, so the system itself? Fail. The “dreaded socialism” isn’t necessarily the solution, but some form of redistribution isn’t just fair, it is the correction of an obvious injustice experienced by the majority at the hands of a tiny minority.
