Where to begin? At age 51 youd think that in 38 years of running youve experienced just about everything there is to experience in ultra running. Then you run a race like the Lake Sonoma 50-miler. It was my first time running this race put on by John Medinger, (aka Tropical John) and his lovely wife, Lisa Henson. I dont know if Ive run a 50-miler with more special attention to detail and more care for all the runners involved than this race. Ive always maintained that Tropical John is the guy who could walk into any establishment of any type of business, saloon, or any other entertainment venue in the world and actually know someone working there -- or very quickly make friends with the people working there. No one is a stranger to this man, and yesterday was proof positive that John and Lisas list of friends is endless. The welcoming, mellow vibe, the amazing food, the relentlessly challenging and utterly beautiful course, the talented field that galloped downhill at us or powered uphill past us like glorious young stallions all added up to a perfect day. The people I shared the trail with yesterday seemed so happy to be out there, beginning with the smiles Annie Trent and I shared with our good Truckee friend, Gretchen Brugman, and carrying on throughout the day with awesome aid station volunteers and folks I didnt know but whose competitive generosity helped me run a race with literally no low points. A couple of highlights stood out: seeing Annie look so pleased to be wearing her age -- 24 -- as her bib number, which is a huge rite of passage for any ultra runner (thanks again to John and Lisa for being so thoughtful), seeing my dear friend Scott Mills a couple of miles from the turnaround, Scotty a good couple of miles ahead of Annie and I, but doing as he always does, stopping to share the goodness of a sun-splashed moment on the spine of a rocky trail, taking a moment to smile and hug the both of us. And, for the second weekend in a row, one of my girls finished a 50-mile race, which again made my chest swell with pride. First Katie ran a courageous race at America River and then Annie doing the same at Sonoma. Thanks to both John and Lisa, who with the magic of caring for others and sparing no small detail have mastered the craft of turning strangers into friends and friends into a community of family members.
