While discussions about the “Future of Ship Safety” were going on at the IMO headquarters in London on June 11, Jens-Uwe Schröder-Hinrichs was at the IMISS 2013 (International Maritime Incident and Near Miss Reporting) Conference in Kotka, Finland, giving a presentation on “Understanding human error and safety implications of the Costa Concordia accident”. The conference was organized by a project called “Competitive Advantage by Safety (CAFE)”, which is coordinated by the Kotka Maritime Research Centre, Finland. The aim of the CAFE project is to examine whether the maritime sector can achieve competitive advantage by focusing on safety. Jens-Uwe Schröder-Hinrichs liked the presentation by Cecilia Österman on the “Accident of Wasa – a modern analysis of causes” and recommends viewing the presentation as soon as it will be made available on the IMISS homepage. However, Jens-Uwe Schröder-Hinrichs was disappointed by the presentation by Pekka Räisänen on “Maritime Safety is a Competitive Advantage!” which argued that simply because of the high costs of an accident to be paid by a company and the narrow margins in shipping, not having an accident will pay off. Jens-Uwe Schröder-Hinrichs would have expected a more detailed and nuanced discussion of the topic.
