While we can be thankful that TransformUs has been rescinded, the biggest issue still remains--students fees. In 40 years the price of an education at the University of Saskatchewan has gone up 4 times after discounting inflation and the cost of living for students has also sky-rocket. Students also have to pay well over $1,000 a year for textbooks. In the meantime collectively, alas, we professors have been looking after ourselves quite well--upper middle class salaries with a 7% pay increase (over 3 years), large amounts of teaching release to pursue grants and do research (much of which is simply career-boosting exercises in vanity), two-year administrative/sabbatical leaves that once again take away resources from students, and the establishment of the 3 schools which are glorified think tanks where they park retired politicians such as Janice MacKinnon, and former provosts such as Fairborn and Atkinson who do nothing of real benefit to undergraduate who are paying more and more for less and less. There is a quote from the below film which sums up the situation. It is like you have been ripped off by a subprime mortgage broker in reference to the student debt crisis. In the recent past we have been blaming senior administrators, government, and corporations. That is all still true but the problem is much bigger and involves those who are embedded in the institution who have been crying foul about academic freedom.
