Who is Team James and what is their story? James Hardy was born May 3, 2006. At the time of his birth, we did not know there was anything different about his development. Two months later, after James’ head did not grow at the expected rate, he had a CT scan and we discovered James had encephalomalacia, or softening of the brain. We later learned James most likely had a stroke in utero which caused the blood to stop going to his brain for a short period of time. As a result, James is physically and cognitively disabled. As James matured, we were always on the look out for things that made him feel joy. It was a fluke that we stumbled upon James’ love of speed after dinner one night at a local restaurant. While we stood outside and talked with family, Adam, James’ Dad, decided to race through the parking lot pushing James in his wheelchair. As I watched, I noticed James had a smile that stretched from ear to ear. This was the moment we knew James loved to go fast. The wind whipping through his hair, the freedom of racing, brought James happiness. And we can continue to bring happiness to James through competing in events with myTEAM TRIUMPH. Every time James is pushed in a racing wheelchair, he can feel free. His physical and cognitive limitations are meaningless when he races down the road. We plan to bring James freedom from restriction and happiness for as long as we can. There are limited spots left for this great event!
