Who is the greatest goalkeeper of all time? In my time watching football Ive narrowed it down to four names - Buffon, Oliver Kahn, Schmeichel & Van Der Sar. Schmeichel had unreal ability & was also a great leader. He won everything too; Euro 92 with Denmark, numerous league titles in Denmark and obviously at United won the treble in 1999. Buffon again has amazing ability and is the most expensive goalkeeper of all time. Hes won numerous Serie A titles and is a World Cup winner too. Kahn looked like and was a beast. He could just intimidate the hardest of strikers (similar to Schmeichel). He achieved great success at Bayern too and is the only goalkeeper in history to have won the Golden Ball. Finally Van Der Sar. Hes one of very few goalkeepers I believe, to have won the Champions League with two different clubs (Ajax & United). Won loads of League titles in Holland and England and holds the record for the most number of minutes played without conceding a goal. He had great longevity too, playing and winning league titles into his 40s. If I had to pick one, itd be Schmeichel. Some of my first footballing memories are of Schmeichel and some of the saves he used to pull out and those crazy eyes and red nose, when shouting at his back four. Theres obviously a lot of great names from eras gone by which I havent mentioned (Gordon Banks, Ray Clemence, Yashin etc). We can only talk about the guys that we saw.
