Why Fear God? If You, LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with You, that You may be feared. Psalm 130:3-4 Recommended Reading 1 Kings 8:39-40 The fear of God is the phrase that defines how most people think about God -- a deity to be feared in light of His righteousness and our unrighteousness. The psalmist, in the opening words of Psalm 130:3, touches on the job of God as understood by mortal man: to mark iniquities. That is, its Gods job to clean up the world, and He does so by noting the sins of the worlds inhabitants. All the worlds religions seem to focus the majority of their attention on what to do to please their god(s) in light of the fact that they have sinned. All except one, that is. The Christian Gospel expands the rest of the words in Psalm 130:3-4 to show how Christianity is different from other religions. Yes, God knows what our sins are but has chosen to forgive them through Jesus Christ. God did what man cannot do -- He became a sinless sacrifice so that He may be feared. Christians dont fear God because He knows weve sinned. Instead, we fear Him (adore Him, worship Him) because He forgave our sins. If you havent accepted God’s gift of forgiveness through faith in Christ, you have reason to fear His judgment. Accept His gift and stand in awe of Him instead. The fear of God is the soul of godliness. John Murray Read-Thru-the-Bible Luke 9-10
