Why PDP ‘candidate’ rejected victory in Kwara council election Religious belief forbids cheating. A councillor-elect in Offa Local Government, Kwara State has rejected the victory ascribed to him at the ward election saying religious belief “forbids cheating.” Despite being officially declared the winner of the Saturday’s rerun election by the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission, KWASIEC, Afolabi Olawole of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, said he lost at the poll to his rival, Adefioye Kayode, of the All Progressive Congress, APC. “In all the eight polling units in my ward the PDP lost, while the APC won convincingly in all the polling units,” he said. “To me, I know that we shall give an account of all our acts on this earth one day. On that day, there will be no influence from anybody; be it Oba, governor, leader, elder, father or mother: but you will be left alone with your deeds. In this wise, I have resolved not be a partaker in getting what is not mine from anybody at all in Offa and in Nigeria as a whole. As a native of this town, I don’t wish my town bad fate.” He advised the KWASIEC to do what is right and release the authentic result of the election. “In the interest of peace and justice in Offa and Kwara State, KWASIEC should release the authentic results of the last Saturday council poll in Offa. The people of Offa have said that they don’t want the PDP. It is clear that Offa people want the APC. It is clear also that Offa people don’t want the PDP.” One of the presiding officers, Oyetunji Akin, at the poll corroborates Mr. Olawole’s story. He said the APC won at the polling unit he presided over. However, the PDP Chairman of Offa Local Government, Rabiu Goke, said Mr. Olawole not his party’s candidate at the poll. He said Mr. Olawole was dropped as the party’s candidate and had subsequently joined the APC to the extent of even campaigning for the party before the election. “In fact, he has since joined the APC and was part of their pre-election rally,” Mr. Goke said. The leaders of the APC in Offa said they have petitioned the Independent Electoral Commission to order KWASIEC to act appropriately. They also promised to seek legal redress over the issue.
