But Europeans in general obtain 11 per cent of their energy from wind turbines Posted by: Douglas Todd Weve seen hundreds, if not thousands, of giant windmills (turbines) as weve driven through Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands. At times weve seen 30 to 50 wind turbines in one view line, usually from a highway. Wind power is a significant source of energy in Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain, Britain and elsewhere in Europe. Its another case of Europe generally being ahead of Canada and the U.S. when it comes to using technology to aid its citizens, in this case by providing sources of clean renewable energy and not just relying on oil and gas, which contribute to global warming and smog. Canada gets only 2.3 per cent of its electrical energy from wind power. However, Europeans in general obtain 11 per cent of their energy from wind turbines and wind farms. Denmark obtains 20 per cent of its electricity from wind power, Spain gets 17 per cent, Germany 11 per cent and the Netherlands nine per cent. Britain is ranked eighth largest producer of wind energy in the world. Despite the disparity between Canada and Europe in regards to actually producing wind turbines, polls show that Canadians are just as likely as Europeans to support wind power. But our politicians arent doing much to encourage it, preferring to put their political muscle into promoting natural gas and the oil sands. Here ïs an excerpt from Wikipedia on wind power in Canada: n a survey conducted by Angus Reid Strategies in October 2007, 89 per cent of respondents said that using renewable energy sources like wind or solar power was positive for Canada, because these sources were better for the environment. Only 4 per cent considered using renewable sources as negative since they can be unreliable and expensive.[8] According to a Saint Consulting survey in April 2007, wind power was the alternative energy source most likely to gain public support for future development in Canada, with only 16% opposed to this type of energy. By contrast, 3 out of 4 Canadians opposed nuclear power developments.[9] Despite this general support for the concept of wind power in the public at large, local opposition often exists, primarily from residents concerned about a perceived eyesore, noise or reduced property values. This has delayed or aborted a number of projects. This opposition has been described as a case of NIMBYism.[10] Several wind farms in Canada have become tourist attractions,[11] to the surprise of the owners. Former Vancouver Sun editor Chris Rose has written extensively about wind power.
