With a new school year coms goals for athletics. Those goals will include an improvement over last years results. You may want to win some championship and qualify for state. You might want to venture for higher goals that are regional and national in scope. What about your academic goals? Many times, our athletes take academics with a grain of salt. Yes, they want to do well but have not made concrete goals for achievement in their respective classes. As demanding as wrestling is on the mat your ability to generate strong academic grades are your foundation. Every student/athlete in their junior year needs to register for the NCAA Clearinghouse. This process will examine your course work and provide feedback as to whether you meet the qualifications for acceptance through the NCAA. Without passing the Clearinghouse you will not e eligible for scholarship money. Many kids wait to long to apply and run out of time when it comes to passing this crucial step. Each kid and family is responsible for their Clearinghouse data. You will need to confer with your school guidance counselor to ensure you are on track with your course work. You may have a great GPA but not meet the criteria set up by the NCAA. Go to the website and register today. Passing your college boards is critical, as well. The ACT and SAT are the two main avenues for college board testing. Although some schools have relegated this test to the backside of the acceptance process, many colleges still use this score when deciding on who they will accept. Especially if your grades are not strong, an excellent college board score may help you gain admittance. Again, talk to your school counselor and find out the schedule for the college board prep classes. They offer them after school and on weekends and can help you especially if you have trouble taking tests. You can take these tests as many times as you want and your best scores from each area will be your score. I encourage my athletes to begin taking this test in their freshman year. There is no replacing a nose to the grindstone approach and working hard in your classes. The bulk of your criteria will come from your GPA and the quality of your coursework. Make each school day a priority and be at your best when you get to class. Lets face it, while you are a student in high school nothing is more important than your school work. These four years will set you up for college which is the final step before embarking on your professional career. Everything you do in high school and college will dictate where you go in your life. Of course, there are no guarantees but you can help yourself with a kick-start when you graduate college and begin a career that provides a salary and benefits. I know youre young but time waits for no one. Soon, you will be in the workforce and you need to be ready now. Remember, youre a student first and an athlete second!
