With a newborn foal being a maiden mares first born you can often strike a few small issues that can hinder the foals early life, none more so than a protective curious mum who falls in love straight away and constantly walks in circles trying to look at her baby. Passive transfer of antibodies in the mares colostrum is taken through the gut wall, this ceases after 12 hours. It is the best practice we find, to stomach tube the baby within 4 hours with 300ml of colostrum, either from the mare or a bank prior to the foal losing strength from following mum around circles. The response time for this big drink is usually 30min. Mum is more content and the foal has plenty of energy.
