With all this talk about flooding in our area (and the rest of the country), here are some quick facts about the types of flooding that typically affect New York City: Coastal flooding happens when storm water flows from the ocean into coastal areas; these flooding levels are categorized as minor, moderate, and major. Flash flooding, however, can occur anywhere from heavy rains and poor drainage. Here are some terms you should know: -Coastal Flood Advisory: Minor flooding is possible. -Coastal Flood Watch: Issued by the National Weather Service when coastal flooding is possible within 12 to 36 hours. -Coastal Flood Warning: Issued by the National Weather service when coastal flooding is occurring, imminent, or expected within 12 hours. -Flash Flood Watch: Issued to indicate current or developing hydrologic conditions that are favorable for flash flooding in and close to the watch area, but the occurrence is neither certain or imminent. -Flash Flood Warning: Issued to inform the public, emergency management, and other cooperating agencies that flash flooding is in progress, imminent, or highly likely.
