With strength training, dont worry so much about feeling all the muscles contract. Compound movements (squat, bench, deadlift, overhead) arent meant for toning the muscles. Really try to get your mind into it more so than just the body. Feel the movement, become its friend, move with it, not against it. Really imagine yourself attached to the bar, one with the bar, and it will dance to your groove.
