Witham 1s - 5 Saffron Walden 2s - 2 After last weeks promotion confirmed for Witham the next goal was to seal top spot and this was achieved through a 5-2 win over 2nd placed Saffron Walden 2s with Man of the Match James Suett bagging all 5 goals. It was a nervy opening to the game, and with the pitch side temperature being abnormally high for the time of year it meant for a sticky surface that led to an error strewn but entertaining half. Both teams battled out the first 15 minutes with both midfields trying to get a foothold in the game however the pace of the opposition was causing Witham to play at a high tempo which bought about a number of errors, fortunately for Witham their defence stood firm. Gradually Witham started to dictate the pace of the game and the chances started to come and it was James Suett who opened the scoring when Brett Parker producing a great pass to Suett who buried it past the keeper, the lead was then doubled when Suett scored from a short corner, the ball broke to Suett at the top of the D who drag flicked it into the bottom left hand corner, however the 2 goal deficit was short lived as Saffron Walden scored when their forward crept in at the back post to flick the ball home. It was then James Suett who bagged his hat-trick in the first half after some great interchanging play from front men Joe Bowman and Suett himself. Saffron Walden again bounced back as Witham were guilty of making some defensive mistakes that saw the away team capitalise to strike the ball home to make it 3-2. Minutes before the end of half time Witham and Suett bagged their 4th of the game when Marshall set Suett through on goal who planted the ball under the goalie and a highly entertaining 1st half ended 4-2. The 2nd half was all about Witham keeping a clean sheet, knowing that Saffrom Walden would have to score a minimum of three goals to stop Witham becoming champions it was an extremely solid display at the back led by James Belsham who put in one of his best performances of the season, aided with excellent displays from Hicks, Holm, Parker and Wiffen and with Neal Hadgraft in goal who pulled off some great saves, most notably when a drag flick from the Saffron Walden striker seemed to be heading for the bottom left corner only for Hadgraft to get down superbly and turn it round the post. Witham were happy to play on the counter attack through DArcy-Smith, Marshall, Wilsher and Hill and with the ever present Joe Bowman and Suett hustling the opponents defence Witham were still creating chances. It was then Withams turn to win some short corners after good work from James Wiffen and Bowman down the right of the pitch. James Suett then sealed the game with another drag flick that flew low in to the right of the goal to seal the game and the league. Man of the Match went to 5 goal hero James Suett who has now notched up 49 goals for the season I was delighted with the teams performance today and on a personal note it is always great to get on the score sheet however the whole team worked tirelessly today and everyone battled through out, we deserved this result, and the season has been a real squad effort I wouldnt have got this many goals without the support from everyone, the team ethic has been amazing. Witham travel to Clacton this Satruday for a 2pm game and keen to make it a 14th win in a row.
