Without functional laws The old adage that ‘justice delayed is - TopicsExpress

Without functional laws The old adage that ‘justice delayed is justice denied’ has become absolutely pertinent for all of us. Needless to say that repeated strikes by the legal fraternity, on one pretext or another, has had a serious impact on the judicial system, chronic load shedding, acute shortage of competent and skilled manpower, among others. The justice-seekers cannot obtain a court injunction; suspects do not appear before court for bail applications. Reports indicate that police cells and prisons in all four provinces have become overcrowded and there is no space to accommodate the increasing number of accused. It has become evident that the inmates live under inhuman conditions, but who cares about Pakistan Prisoners Code (Jail Manual) in this country? Here, in this unjust society, the whole saga contravenes the Constitution of Pakistan, which stipulates that every person has the right to personal liberty and dignity. I have also seen young, talented lawyers, suffering in this society due to frequent strikes and deep-rooted unjust system. They hardly earn enough to put food on the table. In reality, there is no rule of law. Much more is heard about the rule of law on television “talk shows” and also in workshops and seminars but wrongdoers are never brought to justice in this country. In this dismal scenario, where we have injustice everywhere, one question always agitates me: can a country without justice and a proper justice system be called a functioning state?nation.pk/letters/21-Aug-2014/without-functional-laws HASHIM ABRO,
