Woman, 36, disguised as a nurse to steal newborn from maternity ward A WOMAN who pretended to be a hospital worker and stole a newborn baby from a maternity ward has been arrested. The accused, aged 36, was dressed in a white overall when she entered the neo-natal unit at the Hospital Donostia, in San Sebastián in the Basque Country at around 14.30hrs. She told the parents she was going to carry out routine tests on the infant, who had been born just hours earlier. But the woman did not succeed in escaping with her stolen goods, since hospital security staff stopped her at the door and held her in a private room until the Ertzaintza – the Basque Countrys answer to the Guardia Civil – arrived at the scene. They had been alerted by other hospital workers who considered her behaviour to be suspicious. She is described as a Spanish national who was born and lived in the San Sebastián area. This latest attempt to steal a baby mirrors a near-identical case at the same hospital in mid-September 2012. That time, a woman who was said to have mental health problems took a newborn baby girl from the ward whilst the infants parents were asleep in the early hours of the morning. Both the kidnapper and the baby were found an hour later after the accused had caught a taxi to the Herrera neighbourhood of San Sebastián. Source: Think Spain
