Woodside, Middle School Updates: 6th Grade Reading The 6th graders have begun a new unit in READ 180! They are learning about how natural disasters affect people and property in the United States. The students have been able to make many real-life connections between the severe weather in the articles and storms they have experienced in their lives. Currently, Homerooms 8, 9, and 10 are reading about a teenager who was struck by lightning! The 6th graders are enjoying this unit and cannot wait to learn more about hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires, and earthquakes! 6th Grade Math & Science In math, the sixth grade is learning about ratios, rates and proportions. They will be problem solving in chemistry using recipes to solve problems as “Cosmetic Chemists”. They will using a lip balm and shea butter soap recipe. In sixth grade science, we have begun learning about ecosystems and biomes. We made a “Human Food Chain” and a food web where students represented various animals to show how they are related. We will continue to learn about how materials such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen are cycled throughout ecosystems. HR 10 Stay in the loop with this fantastic group! In HR 10 we are working on sequencing events in READ 180. We have been using what we learn in READ 180 in ELA, as we practice using transition words to make our writing stronger and more enjoyable for the reader. In social studies, we are continuing to study Russia and its various rulers over time. We have been practicing ratios, rates and proportions in math class and have been working together to become “Math Masters”. Studying about ecosystems and biomes has been so much fun in Science class. We have also been working collaboratively on conflict resolution and are looking forward to our projects and research for Black History Month.
