World War II memories with Dick Yates. This one is a crazy close - TopicsExpress

World War II memories with Dick Yates. This one is a crazy close call, I can still hardly believe it, but sit is tragic how capricious war can be. I suppose it had been too long since my last close call, so when we stopped for supplies somewhere in Belgium, it was time for another. As was our custom, we set up defensive positions in case of attack. The soldier who usually cut our hair had been injured, so during a short lull in activity I volunteered to cut hair for whoever had the courage to let me try. I was cutting a new replacement’s hair while he sat on a C ration box, using scissors and trying to do a good job; though out on the line appearance didn’t mean much. Suddenly, the Germans hit us with 88 mm fire and mortar shells which hit a tree over our heads. The resultant tree burst rained down shrapnel, taking off a portion of the replacement’s head. I still had the scissors in my hand and a piece of his head was just gone. I checked my body because of the blood and realized I wasn’t hit. It was just fate that he was killed, a young soldier whose name I never knew, and I standing right next to him, untouched. He was just a new replacement that volunteered to have his hair cut. I do not even know to which outfit he belonged.
