Wow! Today I have just got the most inspiring call ever. I literally had to fight back tears. Back in 2008 in my final year of campus; me Steve Odwesso and Felix Jatugo were leaving our usual watering holes when we met a boy who stopped us asking for directions. He was lost dejected, beat, dusty and did not know Nairobi at all. He introduced himself as Peter Muthee Wanjiku. He was in STD 7 but his mother in Nyeri could not afford to pay his fees for STD 8, so she had sent him to look for his aunty Pamela; who worked at Sabina Joy. He was carrying his report forms which showed that he had been first in his class for the last three terms. The kid clearly did not understand what Sabina Joy was all about. So the three of us began to whisper amongst ourselves whether to help him or not. We feared it could be a scam; but something just told us to help him out. We couldnt take him to Sabina Joy for obvious reasons so since I had an extra matress in my room; we offered him accommodation. We picked our potato fries and bought him some as well then took him to our hostel. I was so suspicious that when I went to sleep; I locked the door and hid my keys. The next morning; I took him to Sabina Joy but we could not find his aunt Pamela and so he had to go back to Nyeri disappointed. He did not have fare so I gave him 400 bob and he was off. He took my number on a piece of paper. A few days later I got a strange call; and it was him. He had returned to Nyeri and later got news that his aunt had been arrested a week before he had come to Nairobi. He also told me that he had decided to approach the DC or the area chief or something of the sort; to try and find sponsorship. I gave him words of encouragement and told him that with his attitude he would make it; though I really doubted that myself given the great odds stacked against him. After that. I never heard from him again. A few minutes ago; I got a strange call. And it was him. He had kept my number all that time and had sworn to call me one day to show me his progress. He was calling me to inform me that he has been admitted to the University Of Nairobi to pursue Vetenary Medicine on a full scolarship. Tell me that is not the stuff of fairy tales! I have never witnessed such audacity to believe despite ones current circumstances. I have promised to meet him to buy him lunch when he comes to Nairobi. What a kid! Take a bow; son. Take a bow.
