Xbox One owners: Kinect is still spying on everything you say... - TopicsExpress

Xbox One owners: Kinect is still spying on everything you say... BEWARE!! Microsoft got know everything you talks using Kinect. ...and we can hear you! Last year, the internet erupted into a white-hot ragestorm when Microsoft revealed that Kinect would quietly listen to everything you say, like a futuristic surveillance device poised to relay your everyday life directly to security agencies. The hot-button topic launched a thousand angry threads, with users terrified of the potential breach of privacy. Then the console launched, and as always, we meekly forgot all about it. However, Im here to remind you that Kinect is still listening... and its a bigger issue than you thought. That microphone is indeed snooping on everything said in your living room, and is automatically transmitting directly to a third party who can hear every unguarded utterance, free to use your personal information for nefarious ends. Xbox One owners: Kinect is still spying on everything you say... So who is this shadowy spymaster prying into your private lives? No, its not the NSA. No, its not GCHQ. Or the KGB. Or SPECTRE. Lets bust this conspiracy wide open. Its ME, yes, Jonathan Lester, whos at the heart of this massive surveillance operation. Or more accurately: everyone on your multiplayer team. By default, Kinect is your chat microphone when playing online, meaning that you really, really need to watch what you say to avoid broadcasting far Too Much Information. Im amazed at how many Xbox One owners still dont know that Kinect will transmit anything anyone says in your lounge to all players on the multiplayer server, unless you disable it in the settings menu. To illustrate this, Ive been playing a lot of Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare over the last fortnight, and want to give you a sampler of some of the stuff Ive witnessed over just this short period. Seriously: Ive heard some sh*t. Xbox One owners: Kinect is still spying on everything you say... Dan from the North East: I can remember the first line of your address -- and if I put my mind to it, your debit cards security code -- because you decided to order a pizza over the phone in the middle of a match. I was tempted to order one myself, frankly. Even if you werent playing the game yourself, you were in the room, so every word (and number... and expiry date... and CVV...) was broadcasted live to me and eleven other players. Sam and Andy: stop being so stupid. Dont make up rumours about girls on Facebook. Itll bite you in the ass eventually. This odd little soap opera even continued after I warned them that everyone could hear them - youre just embarrassing yourselves, guys. Also, perhaps you should have been using your free Sunday to do some homework, kids. And to a certain American couple: I hope you work out your problems... but seriously fella, when your significant other broaches important issues like this, the worst thing you can do is keep playing a videogame rather than sitting down and talking things out. Come on, pal. Not only does she deserve better, but WE DONT NEED TO HEAR IT. Xbox One owners: Kinect is still spying on everything you say... Which is rather the point. Even if you luck out and youre playing with sportsmanlike fellow gamers wholl just mute you rather than running up bills on your debit card (thanks again for the pizza, Dan... maybe), its just not appropriate to broadcast your personal life over unregulated VOIP. Its a breach of privacy as far as youre concerned, and a massive breach of online etiquette as far as everyone else goes. There are two simple ways to address this issue. First of all, you can just say Xbox, go to settings, untoggle Kinect chat and plug in the included headset. Yes, its not particularly well made and is rather uncomfortable for long stints, but at least youll be able to keep the channel clear; broadcasting what you want to be heard, and nothing more. But, perhaps most importantly of all, just be more careful about what you broadcast onto the internet, and be aware that theres such a thing as Too Much Information. Evolve PS4, Xbox One & PC Release Date Leaked - Rumour: Evolve, the multiplayer co-op shooter being developed by talent behind the Left 4 Dead games, may have had its release date leaked by an Australian retailer. Respawn considering patching 1080p support into Xbox One Titanfall: Respawn is considering increasing the native resolution of the Xbox One version of Titanfall to 1080p via a post-launch patch, lead engineer Richard Baker has told Digital Foundry. Until then, the game will render at 792p - the same resolution offered by the Xbox One beta. Weve been experimenting with making it higher and lower, said Baker. One of the big tricks is how much ESRAM were going to use, so were thinking of not using hardware MSAA and instead using FXAA to make it so we dont have to have this larger render target. Were going to experiment. The target is either 1080p non-anti-aliased or 900p with FXAA. Were trying to optimise... we dont want to give up anything for higher res. So far were not 100 per cent happy with any of the options, were still working on it. For day one its not going to change. Were still looking at it for post-day one. Were likely to increase resolution after we ship. An increase in resolution isnt the only performance boost Titanfall could see post-release, either, with Baker suggesting that the frame-rate could still be tweaked, too. A lot of the performance is on the GPU side, he continued. Theres still room for optimisation and were still working on it. Ideally it would have been a rock-solid 60 all the time when we shipped but obviously when theres big fights going on, lots of particle effects, lots of physics objects... were still working to condense the systems, make them more parallel so we can hit 60 all the time, ideally. Nintendo of America Launches eShop Indie Website: With the eShop platforms increasingly becoming integral parts of the Wii U and 3DS, Nintendo is likely to continue to increase its support for the stores. Much has been done to ease entry requirements, a process that began on the 3DS, while the Wii U store has opened up new avenues with development tools and access through the likes of Unity and the Nintendo Web Framework. Marketing will also be important, of course, with the store-fronts themselves likely to continue to evolve. Nintendo of America is stepping up its efforts away from the big Ns hardware, too, with a freshly launched Indie web portal, which is dedicated to pointing intrigued consumers towards all of the information they need to make the most of the download platforms. The new page has information and links on notable games, the process for buying downloads, where to buy eShop funds and plenty of attractive artwork. At this stage the featured games — aside from NES Remix — are mostly for the 3DS and are a mix of current and upcoming releases, with Unepic also sneaking in to represent the Wii U. Wed hope that web portals like these — an equivalent in Europe and other territories will hopefully arrive — lay the groundwork for future connectivity between the stores and Nintendo Network IDs. Nintendo has stated that its looking to improve the access we have to its content, so options to use websites such as this to buy a game — with our system of choice automatically downloading the product in standby mode — while away from our hardware would be most welcome. As a source of information this seems like a solid start, however, even if wed substitute the Mario Party: Island Tour 3DS graphic at the top for an eShop-only game.
