Yes, but you need to remember that back then, the Republicans WERE the liberal progressives, and the Democrats the conservatives! Teddy Roosevelt, (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teddy_Roosevelt), who was a republican, and who while president, set up a fact-finding commission when the United Mine Workers went on strike in May 1902. His efforts resulted in the workers getting more pay for fewer hours. FDR increased the National Debt, and only WWII finally gave him the means to get the country out of the Great Depression, long after even Germany managed to shake it off!
