Yes, we are that close, but what Ayn Rand and her objectivist followers seem to forget that is government itself is comprised by individuals. They consistently draw an artificial distinction between government and the individual, as if the two are inherently different entities. When you disparage religion, you in turn discourage moral restraint in individuals. Once individuals reach an elevated status, such as a seat in public service (government), they will be without the culture that pervades the moral code restraining them from acting impulsively. When you reach a point of social anarchy, you reach a point of acting on pure instinct, not reason. At that point, you have lost that which makes you a human being. You have become just another animal. An elitist.
