Yesterday I received a card in the mail from Faxton St. Lukes - TopicsExpress

Yesterday I received a card in the mail from Faxton St. Lukes Hospital, the card had an outdoor scene on the cover and when I opened it the card just said Thank you for being so kind to him and signed by an employee. I didnt know what this was about so I contacted this person and what she told me shocked me! You see, a couple of years ago while working at Clinton Manor apartments I talked to a very lonely resident. Every morning he would come into the office and have coffee with me and we would laugh and he would go on his way. For almost two years this was our morning ritual. One morning he didnt show up so I went down to his apartment and he was lying on the floor. Alive but seriously ill and was taken to the hospital. The hospital called daily and kept me posted on his recovery until he came home. A few months later the company I worked for transferred me because I was beginning to get to close to the residents. I never forgot him and he never forgot me! He passed away on Friday, he had no family but told the hospital that if something were to happen to him to make sure I was contacted. A trooper from the Marcy barracks contacted me but I missed her call, her message said this is regarding Kenneth no last name given but I was listed as next of kin. I left two messages for her to call back and she never did. I am telling you this because I want you to all know how important it is to just say hello to someone who is lonely or needs a friend. I never realized until today how much a smile and a cup of coffee could mean to an elderly person. It bothers me something terrible that I was never able to say goodbye to not only him but to all of the residents there, I was told to leave quietly. This holiday season I ask that you be kind, offer someone a cup of coffee if you see they are cold or cheer someone up that really needs it. You see it is important!!
