Yesterday Kimber got very upset and was inconsolable. It was about 30 minutes before it was time to eat, so were not sure if she was just hungry or if something was bothering her or hurting her. Its likely whatever has had her not eating as well is what had her upset, but we still dont have an answer for that. I finally laid her back down thinking maybe I could get her to calm down at that point, but it was after that that her breathing changed and she started moaning and gasping. We called her nurse over who called the attending cardiologist. They gave her a sedative to relax her, but then she started desatting and before they could get a chest X-ray or echo done, they had to intubate her. When they intubated her, there was some formula/breast milk in her airway, so the cardiologist thinks she must have spit up/vomited and aspirated. Shes never spit up before. She decompensated quickly and she coded. They did CPR for 32 minutes before they got her on ECMO. During this time her sats were very low (Ive been afraid to ask how low, but know it was below 50%). Today shes in the resting stage and they are trying to let her heart and lungs recover. They seem to like what they see right now and she seems to be stable. There are several blood clots in the ECMO machine. Theyre adjusting her heparin, but have to be careful because they dont want her to bleed. There is talk of replacing some of the parts in the machine, but they havent done that yet, which makes me nervous. They did an ultrasound of her head and so far there are no brain bleeds so thats good. Theyve gotten her blood pressure more stable, the lactate in her blood is finally coming down; its been elevated since we came in on Sunday. I think the plan is to keep her on for a few days and then to see if we can start to wean her off. So right now were just waiting. Praying that this is just another piece of her testimony.
