Yesterday the House Appropriations Committee released H.R. 5230, a supplemental package to address the crisis at our southern border. It contains a total of $659 million, as opposed to the President’s $3.7 billion request, for border security, enforcement of immigration and customs laws, humanitarian assistance and illegal immigration prevention. Because its fully offset through cuts within federal agencies, it will result in no new or additional federal spending. Some highlights of the bill include: 1. Doubling funding for the National Guard presence on the border. 2. Redirecting existing foreign aid for Central American countries to prioritize repatriation of illegal immigrants from those nations. 3. Providing sufficient funding for temporary housing and humanitarian assistance to unaccompanied minors already in U.S. custody while they await processing and adjudication. 4. Closing the loophole in the 2008 law so that all unaccompanied minors can be screened and repatriated quickly. You can read the full bill at the link below. What do you think of this legislation?
