Yesterday the Rotorua Review published an article about me questioning tax payer funds being allocated to a private business. I have had a strong reaction from many people in our community, so I will clarify my position in the hope that it will bring more understanding to the Rotorua region on exactly where I stand on this issue. I am NOT anti-tourism or anti-Mountain Biking. I am asking one very simple question - why does a Queenstown owned company whose 2013 PROFIT according to their Annual Report, was just a shade over 21 Million and wholly owns the Christchurch Casino, need tax payer money to continue to expand their business. Im not challenging the concept, or its implementation, in fact Im stoked that our community has such awesome facilities, Im simply asking the question on whether this could have been funded internally by the business owners. There are sectors of Rotorua who really need help and the use of tax payer funds needs to be questioned in order for there to be integrity in our processes, particularly when allocating tax dollars, in light of the fact that so many people in our region could use a hand. I sincerely hope that people will read this and have a greater understanding of my position on this issue. If you still believe that I am wrong to question this funding, please feel free to contact me and I am more than happy work through this with you so that perhaps I can better understand why I shouldnt, but I am asking, please can you discontinue the assumptions about me and abuse thats being sent. Its not a positive reflection on our community nor the sector you are claiming to represent.
