Yesterday was a BIG day for me -- 1st trip outside the house since - TopicsExpress

Yesterday was a BIG day for me -- 1st trip outside the house since I came home from the hospital Feb 12. Talk about cabin fever...I was ready to get out and about. I had grand plans. After the 9:30 doctor appointment I planned to go grocery shopping (using one of those carts you drive around the store!). Well, it was almost 1:30 until I got home (get xrays, wait, see doctor, wait, see scheduler for next surgery) and I was so tired I ended up sleeping for 4 hours. I was wiped out! No grocery shopping just yet.... Update from the doctor: I can start outpatient PT next week (3 times a week for one month), no more house arrest. BUT I still have the 50% weight bearing restriction on the broken right hip for another 2 weeks, then a 2 week transition to full weight bearing on the new hip. Even though I can leave the house, I move VERY SLOWLY and can walk for a very limited time because of the strain on my bad left hip, so I still wont get out and about very much for the next month. But by the end of March I should be in great shape! Dr Deluca didnt like the looks of some areas of the incision so he put me on antibiotics for 10 days. And I scheduled the left hip surgery for May 28 in Pinnacles brand new West Shore Hospital. Dr Deluca said the femur breaks in less than 1 in 100 hip replacement surgeries and he doesnt expect it to happen again when they do the left hip, so recovery from that one should be a lot easier without weight-bearing restrictions -- and Ill have a good right hip! I am so blessed to have so many wonderful friends -- the Caring Group at church gave me a beautiful hand knit prayer shawl. I have received so many cards, notes, flowers, calls and well wishes and even a complete meal from Terry Gawlas (delicious ziti, salad and fresh fruit) that gave Matt a much needed break. Many thanks to all my bunco friends who have sent cards, called, etc. I should be back in the swing of things with TWO new functioning hips by the end of the summer. I am so looking forward to SPRING, or warmer weather at least. But my true goal is to be able to walk without a walker or cane....maybe by September. I may try to go to church on Sunday. And I may try that grocery shopping trip on Friday, but Im not sure. I thought my first outing would be to the casino, but I have to interest in trying that for a while yet. This surprises me! But that entails a bit more walking than I can handle with a walker at a SLOW pace and with a bum left hip. I continue to get a little better and a little stronger every day -- but Im surprised at how weak I still am. Guess that will change starting next week when I am getting out 3 times a week for PT. The worst is behind me. Thank you everyone for helping me get through this!!!
