Yesterday was somewhat surreal. Spent it moving through the streets filming with a friend. Got fitted for a bullet proof vest and a respirator. If youve ever worn either, they are utterly confining and a bit crazy making. Checked in with friends and fellow filmmakers to make sure they had ear plugs and cereal bars and helmets.... Cameras, cameras everywhere. Major news outlets taking over hotels to set-up operations. Folks who normally cover wars have been deployed to middle America. I wonder if people understand just how out of control things have become here in St. Louis. I wonder if people know that Ferguson and St. Louis are right outside their doorstep. The police are preparing to wage war on the people. They intend to retaliate against media and protestors.... These now commonplace conversations I have with activists and media makers about police pepper spraying them in the face for recording or for shouting in the street or for being on the wrong sidewalk. It is rumored that today will be the day. That rumor has come many times now. And each time, I am equally anxious. No matter what happens when the announcement is made, I believe that the ancestors are making a way for us to thrive, not merely survive.
