Yesterday we took Skip to the orthopedic surgeon. Heres what we found out. Skip broke his femur (thigh bone) years ago. Instead of repairing the break, which is what should have been done, a Femoral Head Ostectomy or FHO was done. In very basic terms an FHO is typically done when there is pain caused by how the head of the femur is fitting into the socket. The head is removed so the bones arent hitting each other and causing friction. Unfortunately, in Skips case, an FHO was not only an unnecessary surgery, but it was also a terribly done surgery. X-rays showed debris, bone fragments and bone spurs surrounding the top of the femur bone which were rubbing against the socket and have been causing Skip pain and discomfort for years. Imagine shards of bone scrapping against bone every time he took a step. Skip went into surgery yesterday afternoon and had all the debris and bone fragments cleaned out. Hell require water therapy to build up his atrophied hip muscles in a few weeks. For now hes on heavy pain medications, his hip is being iced multiple times a day and hes receiving a ton of love. His surgery was a little over $2,000. Well be posting a fundraising link soon. And, of course, updates on this wonderful little nugget who was all tail wags just hours after waking up from surgery.
