Yogendra Yadav Lingaraj, my old friend, farmers leader and one of the finest human beings I have known,c finally joined AAP. The Hindu- Aam Admi Party (AAP) on Tuesday got a shot in the arm with prominent personalities involved in people’s movements joining the party in Odisha. Noted farmer leader and president of Samajbadi Jan Parishad, Lingaraj, formally joined the party in presence of professor Anand Kumar, member AAP’s national executive, here. Mr. Lingaraj has been involved in a number of people’s movements against ‘mindless’ land acquisition for mineral extraction and industrial projects. Mr. Lingaraj had unsuccessfully fought two assembly elections. The joining of the farmer leader is seen as a big boost for AAP which is trying to gain foothold in the State. Similarly, environmentalist and RTI activist Biswajit Mohanty also formally joined the party. Addressing a press conference, Prof. Kumar said, “the party will strengthened with joining of persons having background in people’s struggle. Their involvement will spread positive waves in favour of the party.” “AAP has been getting huge response in the State. From mere 5000-strong membership in January 10, we have touched 2 lakh mark within 20 days. People want an alternative force to both Congress and BJP. Besides, the regional party during his long tenure in government is neck-deep in corruption,” he said. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Lingaraj said, “there is a political vacuum in the State. Shah Commission enquiry pointed out at mining scam worth Rs. 60000 crore. But proper estimation would throw a much larger figure. It is matter of shame that opposition parties are not able to raise the corruption issue against regional party.”
