You know suspense is the heart and soul of filmmaking. Even a comedy or an epic space opera need that critical element suspense. Will he wont he? What did she know? Where were they? Whats under the bed? Hitchcock was the master of suspense in seemingly mundane and minimalist settings. Ordinary people doing devious things were his mantra in a way. Once in a while a Hitchcock-esque director will be declared heir to Hitchcock style but David Finchers Gone Girl was the only film Ive seen which actually exceeded the rotund master in his own game. Gone Girl as a film, has so many layers upon layers of suspense motifs, tips of the hat and little tips and tricks playing all around the frame that I felt like a layman thoroughly captivated by the plot and forgot everything about examining and learning from his blocking or grammar. Interstellar was great, but as far as suspense and immersion, Gone Girl is my favorite this year. Its like a delicious cheesecake which has a fragmentation grenade inside.
