You may have already heard of this, but in case you havent: THE BIMAL ROY EXHIBITON JULY 7- 20 A museum is not merely a repository of antiquities. Being a relevant cultural institution, it must engage with the popular arts. With this aim in view, the Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya hosts an exhibition to honour the legacy of Shri Bimal Roy. Museum director Sabyasachi Mukherjee believes that in celebrating the memory and achievements of a master like Bimal Roy, we also extend the celebration to that bygone era Roy represents. Bimal Roy (1911 to 1966 ) brought a rare and austere aesthetic to films distinguished by nuanced exploration of human relationships, engaging our narrative tradition of songs and dance with subtlety through eloquent lyricism. Sympathy for the underprivileged and a deep understanding of social evils are a hall mark of his cinematic legacy. From 7th July 2014 onwards, the Bimal Roy memorabilia will be on display at the Curator’s gallery for two weeks. Bimal Roy’s family has opened the treasury to Roy’s personal belongings -posters, photographs, costumes, contracts, song books including rare ones of New Theatre classics like Maya and Mukti, the Arriflex camera he used to shoot Bandini among others. These will be on view. Enduring film classics Bandini, Sujata and Madhumati will be screened at the Coomaraswami Hall. Shivendra Singh Dungarpur will conduct a workshop on film preservation and theatre personality Nivedita Baunthiyal will hold a film/heatre appreciation workshop for municipal school children as part of the event. There will be short talks by eminent academics before a film screening to enhance the experience of watching a B&W movie. A special attraction will be a musical evening during the BIMAL ROY season to showcase the exhilarating musical legacy he has left for us.
