Your Classic Cartoon For Today: UNDERDOG Underdog, Shoeshine Boys heroic alter ego, shows up whenever his love interest Sweet Polly Purebred is being victimized by bad guys Simon Bar Sinister or Riff Raff. Underdog nearly always speaks in rhyme, as in Theres no need to fear, Underdog is here! His voice was supplied by Wally Cox, who played teacher Mr. Peepers on TV in the 50s and was a popular regular on Hollywood Squares. 124 Underdog episodes were produced by Total Television, that also did Tennessee Tuxedo & a fave, King Leonardo. It originally aired on NBC on Saturday mornings from 1964-67. NORMA McMILLAN voiced Sweet Polly (and Casper the Friendly Ghost & Davey on Davey & Goliath). She was born in Vancouver & she died there, in 2001 at 79. Her real-life daughter, Alison Arngrim, played Nellie in Little House on the Prairie from 1974-83 & her son, Stefan Arngrim, played Barry Lockridge on the classic Irwin Allen sci-fi series, Land of the Giants from 1968-70. ALLEN SWIFT voiced both bad guys Simon Bar Sinister (copying Lionel Barrymore) & gangster Riff-Raff. He also did most of the voices in the live-action/puppet kids show Diver Dan. He provided most of the voices for Mad Monster Party in 1967 starring Boris Karloff & Phyllis Diller, & replaced Buffalo Bob Smiths voice doing Howdy Doody after Buffalo Bob suffered a heart attack. He died in 2010 in NYC at age 86. WALLY COX: In real life Wally was Marlon Brandos lifelong best friend since they were kids. Wally died of a heart attack in 1973 when he was only 48. Brando kept his ashes and after Brandos death in 2004, the ashes of both buddies were spread together over Death Valley & Tahiti.
