Youth Alliance on Constitutional Review and Electoral Reform (YACORE) "Our Senators are debating today over the amendment of the 1999 Constitution, pls stay tuned on your TV Sets and the twitter handle, #ConstReview. SEE WHETHER YOUR SENATOR CARES"! _IGWE GODSPOWER_ Press Release: Constitution Review: A defining moment and the will of the people must prevail Abuja- July 15, 2013. The Senate will commence voting for its proposed amendments to the Constitution tomorrow, Tuesday, July 16, 2013. The House of Representatives is also expected to commence the consideration of the proposed amendments advanced by its Adhoc Committee on the Review of the Constitution by 11am on Tuesday, July 16, 2013. A youth coalition, Youth Alliance for Constitution & Electoral Reform (YACORE), that has been actively involved in the constitution review process has called on all Senators to uphold the principles of accountability and transparency as they begin voting on the proposed amendments to the constitution on Tuesday, July 16, 2013. The group also called on the lawmakers to be guided by the wishes of the people as they vote on the amendments. If we truly practice constitutional and representative democracy, then views and recommendations of the people must be respected and eternally preserved. According to a press statement released by the Alliance, this is a critical stage of the constitution review process and a defining moment for the 7th Assembly and future of our democracy; they urged the lawmakers to place the collective interest of the people over and above their personal interest as they vote for the proposed amendments. YACORE notes that the members of the 7th Assembly have an opportunity to write their names in gold if they deliver to Nigerians a veritable people’s constitution. However, it is concerned with the hasty pace adopted by the Senate in amending the constitution since the Senate committee on constitution review submitted her report on June 4, 2013. We call on all Nigerians to follow the Senate Voting sessions and House of Representatives Debate on Tuesday, July 16, 2013. Monitor your legislators and ensure they vote on issues that address your concerns.
