Youths charged over northern beaches break-ins:(via QPS Cairns) Smithfield police charged a 14-year-old Thursday Island boy and a 19-year-old North Cairns man on Friday following investigations into a number of break-in offences allegedly committed at Ellis Beach on Friday morning. It will be alleged that the pair gained entry to a bar and grill business at around 6am and stole a packet of cigarettes and a lighter. It will be further alleged that a short time later they gained entry to a bungalow at a nearby caravan park and attempted to steal a purse before fleeing on foot after being challenged. Police subsequently located the pair walking on the Captain Cook Highway and they were taken into custody. They were charged with multiple counts of entering premises and stealing and entering a dwelling with intent. They were also charged in relation to the alleged burglary of a Martyn Street unit and subsequent theft of a vehicle from the basement car park last Friday morning. The man has been remanded to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court later this morning and the boy will be dealt with under the provisions of The Youth Justice Act 1992.
