another #treatyalliance thought..... Further to the treaty identification card discussion last night, there is more.. In 1998, Jennifer A. Brown, a noted and achieved public academic, argued that Canadian citizenship is illegitimate when it comes to Indigenous Peoples on account that our consent was never sought nor given to be included into the definition of citizen in Canadian law... Remember when our grandparents couldnt vote in federal elections? Assumptions that we are readily entrenched in the Canadian Constitution and citizens according Canadian law should be questioned and should be challenged. Not to be provocative, nor adversarial, but to properly identify our relationship in the nation state. There is a self-determination exercise that has yet to happen for our people and it should have started long ago. This is part of the outstanding work from the Constitutional Conferences of the early 1980s. Today, an entire generation of hundreds of thousands of us are left wondering who we are in the context of the Canadian experience, because we certainly arent being treated equally.... Hence the reason why it is important to begin the self-identification process. If you think this line of thinking has merit, then you might be a member of the #treatyalliance.
