b/c Hmong Innovating Politics (HIP)hop saved my life. like so many - TopicsExpress

b/c Hmong Innovating Politics (HIP)hop saved my life. like so many Hmong, Blacks and Latinos who I grew up with, I witnessed & experienced the effects of social injustice and institutionalized racism on education, health, and housing. after I return home from college/dc/grad life I saw that much didnt changed. growing up in a low-income neighborhood in Sacramento, I saw the realities that made it hard for many of my peers and family members to succeed. my last memory of Sacramento when I left at the age of 18 to pursue higher ed was the closing of Sac High. sadly 10 years later, I returned to a city devastated by massive school closures. as a result, i was hungry for change then ever. HIP was born b/c young Hmong folks saw the disconnect between our cmty and those in power. it was time to find innovative ways to engage those disengaged and amplify a cmty voice that was never voiceless. I became a HIP organizer b/c I believe that we can make a profound impact on the way power operates (especially at the local level) when we can organize our cmty to take action. But most importantly I became a HIP organizer b/c I needed a space to connect, share and heal. HIP has some of the most dedicated, talented, & passionate organizers in Sactown. While every HIP organizer got a unique story to tell, you will find that they are ALL committed to economic and social justice to ensure that all cmty needs are met, instead of the further enrichment of the privileged few. If koj yog Hmong and hungry for change in Sactown, if koj yog Hmong and want to build this movement w/ other POCs, if koj yog Hmong and want to be HIP, then join me this Friday to learn how you can get involved. whether koj yog Hmong or not, join us anyways b/c we still need you in this movement to make Sactown a better place. in solidarity, myv.
