by AWR Hawkins 15 Nov 2014 On November 14, federal prosecutors made it clear that Attorney General Eric Holder has taken the death penalty off the table for four men charged in the gang-related murder of Waynesboro, Virginia, police officer, Captain Kevin Quick. The Daily Progress reports that 45-year-old Quick was reported missing on February 1. His body was found days later. Siblings Daniel Mathis, Shantai Shelton, and Mersadies Shelton have been charged in the death. A fourth person, Kweli Uhuru, has also been charged. All four men belong to the Bloods gang set 99 Goon Syndikate, and their trial begins on May 4. Prosecutor Timothy J. Heaphy says Holder is responsible for making the call on death penalty cases. He said, [The AG] reviews each potential death penalty case at his kitchen table, often late at night. I have known [Holder] for years and continue to have great confidence in him and his judgment. Halisi Uhuru and Anthony Stokes have also been charged in connection with Quicks death. While in district court on November 14, Halisi--who is the gangs Double Original Gangster--complained that the treatment he has received at the Western Virginia Regional Jail is a violation of [his] due process rights.
