A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back. - Luke 6:38 (NRSV) A little boy outside the grocery store was clutching some sports cards that the store was giving out as a promotion. He wanted to give an extra one to another child. His mother objected. “Giving doesn’t make you rich,” she said. This bit of folk wisdom had convinced her but not her son. She then took her son — and the cards — and walked forcefully away. Neither she nor the boy looked happy. What a contrast this scene was to Zacchaeus’s experience! Zacchaeus discovered that giving did make him rich, indeed. He prepared a meal for Jesus and his followers. He promised Jesus that he would give half of his possessions to the poor. Zacchaeus gave from a heart overflowing with joy and gratitude for the new life Jesus had given him. If they had had sports cards in ancient Jericho, no doubt Zacchaeus would have given away his extra one — and walked away happy!
