didache - June 16, 2013 OWNING UP Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” Nathan answered David, “The Lord on his part has forgiven your sin: you shall not die.” — 2 Samuel 12:13 “Ako na!” she said (“Ako na” is a colloquial term that reluctantly lays blame on one’s self), when she was reprimanded by her supervisor. It was her way of putting the matter to rest, without contrition. After her boss left, she started to explain that she didn’t do anything wrong. She claimed it wasn’t her fault but her boss’s. What a contrast to our first reading where Nathan called David’s attention to the sin he had committed. David could have wormed his way out of the situation he had created. He was king, after all, and could have disregarded Nathan. It would have been more politically practical. He could have denied it effortlessly. Yet, David took it like a real man and admitted his sin. He was quick to admit his fault with sincerity and contrition. Many of us deny our wrongdoing to save face, to avoid the consequences of our actions or to simply hold on to our pride. We are afraid to show that we are imperfect or weak. Yet David, king, conqueror, warrior — a man after God’s own heart — humbled himself and confessed his sins. We could learn a lot from David. Jun Asis (mabuting.balita@gmail) Reflection: Do you let you pride get in the way of truthfulness? Lord, teach me to be humble of heart, to see my sins and repent of them swiftly. St. John Francis Regis, pray for us.
