#gcNews-->(Former Cult Members To Fight Cultism In Nasarawa State) A number of former cult followershave made a pledge to join the Nasarawa State Government in its efforts to annihilate undercover cult activities in its higher institutions. The group, acting under the aegis of Campus Cult Eradication Foundation, made the statement inLafia on Wednesday during a courtesy visit on the State Commissioner for Information and Ethical Re-orientation, Hamza Elayo. The group consists of ex-cult members from different confraternities in the state. Its Coordinator, Mr. Samuel Ejembi, stressed that cultism is a threat to the society as well as to the future of the Nigerian youth. Many young people, he explained, have lost their lives because of their involvement in cult activities, while numerous others have been expelled from school for the same reason. Mr. Ejembi added that more than 550 cultists had renounced their membership of cult groups in Nasarawa State, with over 80 per cent of them being indigenes. Most of the youth initiated into cultism were ignorant of the consequences of their action, said Mr. Ejembi, hence, there is need forstrong ethical orientation. The Government was urged to fashion out more realistic ways of eradicating campus cultism by engaging those who were once members of such groups. "It takes someone who has been in and out of cultism to speak the right language and convince other members to renounce their membership. "A cultist might be arrested and prosecuted, but after serving his prison term, he would go back even more deadly. But when someone who has seen it all talks to him, he would have a change of heart," Mr. Ejembi said. The Commissioner Elayo, represented by Umar Idris, DirectorEthical Reorientation in the ministry, noted the visit was"timely" in view of the increased incidence of cult-related clashes onvarious campuses across the state. He said the state was ready to partner with the group in order to eradicate cultism in tertiary institutions. He said the government was willing to collaborate with any group that shared its vision of protecting lives and property. It would be recalled that the Police Commissioner in the state, Umar Shehu, last week confirmed the arrest of seven students of Nasarawa State Polytechnic, Lafia, over their alleged involvement in cult clashes that left one student dead. Consequently, the management of the state Polytechnic on Monday suspended 12 students indefinitelyover alleged involvement in cultism.
