This was the first time it actually registered, and dawned on me that for the past two years many Subway, KFC, Pizzaboys, and other food outlets, including clothes stores and hardware stores advertise for workers consistently. It is for this reason I am still flabbergasted by the ministers statement earlier this week that illegal immigrants are taking away desperately needed work from locals. More amazing still, is that the plan to deport 30 thousand of them has not entailed any public discussion on the massive cost involved. It costs a country thousands of dollars to deport illegal immigrants! Deportees do not pay their own fares back home. Not only is this cost borne by the government, the two police wardens used to escort them to their home countries account for two return tickets, including in most cases hotel accommodation, ground transportation and other costs. How much more sensible is it to tighten immigration policies, and regularize current illegal immigrants and set them loose to work and pay taxes? That way they would generate revenue for the government, which would go toward the cost of providing public social services so they wouldnt be a burden on the state. That way, the country saves money, companies desperate for workers are given employees, and everybody wins.
