kusintha kwa bible I was truly perplexed and astounded when I heard the rumour that Pope Francis had authorized the rewriting of the Holy book of the Catholic Church and Christianity as a whole. The rumour also claims that such a task has been entrusted to a widely-known author by the name of J.K. Rowling, who is the author of the famous Harry Potter series. I do not claim to be a very strong Christian or anything close to that but certainly this news should be cause for great alarm for those who consider themselves to be Christians. I will try to expand the aforementioned title, try to understand the reasons behind it and evaluate what this might entail for the Catholic Church and Christianity as whole. I do not write to offend anyone but merely to caution and inform as to what is being done to the highly- regarded Holy Bible. Firstly, we will explore the importance of the Bible to Christianity and to the Catholic faithful. The Bible is basically the blueprint, the bone and meat to the life and soul of Christianity, and I believe it is safe to assume that one would not exist without the other. In Christianity circles, It is regarded as a sacred book upon which many aspects of the “Christian life” are founded upon, for example: The Ten Commandments of the Lord; upon which the aspect of sin is based upon, The story of Jesus Christ, which serves as the assurance of both the Lord’s unfaltering love and His “super-human” abilities, and not to mention the creation of the world, an achievement which basically dwarfs all human achievements to a mere grain of sand in a dessert, which emphasizes and certifies God’s “untouchable” status. These customs and beliefs have been passed on from generation to generation using this very Book that is now to be changed. Now if such an immensely-important book is to be rewritten, then it begs the questions “who is worthy enough to be entrusted with such a task?” It is believed that the Bible was written by God himself; who using the power of the Holy Spirit, guided men and prophets to transfer His message onto animal skins, parchments, and stone. These were later compiled to form what is now called the Bible. The history of the Bible’s compilation is beyond the scope of this writing, therefore I will not digress into that. The fact that the cover of the standard Bible does NOT bear a single name of a human as its rightful author emphasizes the elevated status the Holy Book has attained in The Church; in other words, NO person is great enough to be granted such an unattainable honour of being the author of the Bible. Now this decision to rewrite the bible begs the question “Is J.K. Rowling, a mere mortal, worthy of such an honour?” or in a more appropriate phrasing “should the Word of God be associated with such lunacy and ludicrous disgrace?” Not to take any credit from the genre-shifting writing skills of J.K. Rowling, (I, myself, am an avid Harry Potter reader) but it is not befitting for such a task to be undertaken by one mere mortal, let alone to be endorsed by the Vatican. I have been searching on many websites in order to understand the reasons behind the decision of rewriting the Bible. One website wrote: ““The sales of the Jesus Christ action figure have dropped by over 200% in the last 10 years, we are in need of new, compelling and toy-friendly characters… like the dinosaur in Toy Story. Our revenue streams are shrinking so the more Hollywood-esque the better” a source close to the Pope told WWN”. If all these rumours are anything to go by, then it leaves a lot to be desired since money is the major driving force of this decision. This step in itself, if true, will bring confusion. If the book upon which Christianity lays its founding principles is being changed to meet the requirements of today’s generation, what could have stopped the church from altering the bible to sway the masses of the past generations to their side? And is the Bible a “standard” book of truth or just a façade by the church to keep people on their side? Keep in mind that I am not questioning the validity of the Bible but rather listing the questions that might be asked by analytical and inquisitive minds. In an attempt to increase the masses that follow The Church’s beliefs, this move by The Church, if true, might as well result in a dwindling spiral of decreasing numbers of followers. I will conclude with a question upon which everybody should reflect on after reading this article. Should The Church change its standards in order to accommodate the moral standards of the modern generation or should it change the moral standards of the modern generation to fit God’s standards?
