Microsoft ready to name Satya Nadella new CEO, report says After months of searching, Microsofts board is said to be close to naming Steve Ballmers replacement. Bill Gates also may be out as chairman. A Bloomberg report says that the companys board is preparing to name Satya Nadella as Microsofts next CEO. It also says the board may decide to replace Bill Gates as chairman. If Nadella, now in charge of cloud computing, is about to become only the third CEO in Microsofts 38-year history, the company will put in charge the sort of brainy technologist who is closer to the Gates mold than the hard-charging salesman that is Steve Ballmer. Nadella is in charge of the organization responsible for building Microsofts Cloud OS, which powers Office 365, Bing, SkyDrive, Xbox Live, Skype, Dynamics, and enterprises around the world. The report, quoting people briefed on the process, said that John Thompson, Microsofts lead independent director, is being considered as a possible chairman to replace Gates. CNET reported on Wednesday rumblings that a decision could come down sometime within the next couple of weeks. But the search to find Microsofts next boss has become the tech equivalent of Waiting for Gadot. Nadella has figured in rumors as a possible candidate for several months. Earlier Thursday, CNET reported that he was about to get he nod, citing Recodes Kara Swisher. Whats new this time around is the scenario in which Thompson would step into the role of chairman and Gates would officially sever his official connections with the company he founded with Paul Allen. Insiders and executive recruiters say that the appointment of a new CEO could involve the departure of both Gates and Ballmer. They say a new CEO might be uncomfortable taking steps that reversed decisions carried out under the Gates-Ballmer regime if the duo still sat on the board. Nadellas previous stints over the last couple of decades were as president of the Server and Tools business, senior vice president of R&D for the online services, and vice president of the Microsoft Business division. I am pleasantly surprised that they went with someone who knows at least something about MSFTs core business. Wait and see if hes up to it though. flagshare1likereply Tête 11 hours ago @mewhowhat What does the term butt buddy mean? Oh yeah, it means youre a 12 year old moron for using it. flagsharelikereply AJB6001 20 hours ago Im going to miss all the ballmer crappy freeze frame pics used by cnet and others to make fun of him. Not really. flagshare1likereply becool773 20 hours ago If they let Bill go out of MS, then its gonna be a huge blow to their brand. flagsharelikereply MargonTheGodless 18 hours ago @becool773 nothing could hurt their brand at this point. flagshare3likereply t8 15 hours ago @becool773 Do they have a brand? flagshare1likereply roblearns 10 hours ago I will still associate Gates with MS, whether chair or not. they would be insane to antagonize him, but if ipthey are just ready to let go...so be it. flagsharelikereply cyber.monk 21 hours ago Board of directors need to take this opportunity to break the company into 2 separate entities, one enterprise oriented and another consumer. Unshackle them from each other like how they did with Expedia. flagsharelikereply patruns 22 hours ago Its not called SkyDrive anymore...... :) flagshare1likereply Rc100729 11 hours ago Just like its not called Metro anymore, it called... what is it called again? It doesnt matter where someone is from, as long as they took the time to learn. flagshare6likereply Mingu7 21 hours ago @kaibelf @Nishant_Soni Agreed Kaibelf. Education is king. Ive heard Satya speak at a couple of the MS Build conferences. He is highly educated and speaks very eloquently. I dare say, he has a dash of the Steve Jobs cool to him, but with actual technical chops that Steve Jobs could only dream of having. flagshare4likereply mudphud 19 hours ago @Nishant_Soni Who cares what race someone is as long as they are the best person for the job? I thought that was what is supposed to happen. As long as they are running the companies well, I could care less where they come from. flagshare1likereply ESUNintel 11 hours ago Nothing wrong with that. Nadella considers himself Indian American. In the United States being American doesnt mean being Caucasian and White; we have people from many ethnicities that contribute to society and consider themselves to be proud Americans. I suppose you can argue that ones ethnicity and background can play a role in their decision making process; however, Im sure Nadella got to where he is today by showing strong leadership skills and by finding solutions to many challenges. flagsharelikereply chatins Jan 31, 2014 He has a fix-it list a mile long. Broken Windows is the least of the problems. Catch up in mobile on ARM. Apple has an excellent cloud backup that makes jumping devices easy. flagsharelikereply mindspeakapps Jan 31, 2014 Great engineer.. Actually seems like a waste of talent since CEO is political flagsharelikereply MargonTheGodless 18 hours ago @mindspeakapps A good CEO knows what his underlings are doing, the theory behind it and how to realize a vision... Its not all political. Balmer was just a horrible CEO. flagshare1likereply LasloM 12 hours ago @MargonTheGodless @mindspeakapps While you may not have liked Balmer - and Balmer may have been more of a marketing puke than a visionary..... Balmers results speak for themselves. By many measures, he was an excellent CEO. If I am to guess at your sentiment.... I agree with it, though. flagshare1likereply EnticingHavoc Jan 31, 2014 This guy indicates that the board apparently perceives web based services as the pivotal business for MSs future. Additionally Bill Gates has lost its clout and has turned from an asset into a liability for MS. I guess it was long overdue to depose him. flagshare2likereply mudphud 19 hours ago @EnticingHavoc How is he a liability? Overall I would say since he is so identified with the company, if nothing else he provides good PR. They could find someone who is more positive for the company, but I wouldnt say hes become a liability. flagsharelikereply MargonTheGodless 18 hours ago @mudphud @EnticingHavoc He is a liability in that he has become the queen of England. Officially he has little or no power, but he commands the loyalty of a lot of people. How do you run a company without the absolute respect and loyalty of your subjects, err... employees? flagsharelikereply t8 15 hours ago @EnticingHavoc Agreed. Bill Gates was a strategist, not a visionary. He copied copied and copied. Microsoft will always be behind if they just copy Apple, Google, etc. They need to invent and innovate. flagsharelikereply Norseman Jan 31, 2014 Howd you like to tell Bill Gates that Windows 8 was a bad idea? Or that Surface was a bad idea? Its painful to hear--and tell--the truth sometimes. Maybe it IS time for a changing of the guard. flagshare2likereply juan_trujillo Jan 31, 2014 @Norseman Windows 8 isnt a bad idea, Surface is not a bad idea. You might have issues with their execution or their strategy, but as ideas they are both brilliant. flagshare6likereply Norseman Jan 31, 2014 @juan_trujillo @Norseman The one-size-fits-all strategy is incapable of being executed well. That makes it a bad idea. flagshare2likereply Mingu7 21 hours ago @Norseman @juan_trujillo Windows8/Surface is not one size fits all. Microsoft allows OEMs to make their own Windows 8 tablets, hybrids, whatevers. That is most definitely NOT one size fits all. I think Apple falls more into the one size fits all category. flagshare2likereply MargonTheGodless 18 hours ago @Mingu7 lol I dont think that word means what you think it means. flagsharelikereply man_in_la2000 Jan 31, 2014 its a mistake flagsharelikereply shellcodes_coder Jan 31, 2014 Too late to save M$, its becoming irrelevant and people careless about M$ products besides Xbomb lol flagsharelikereply Mr. Dee Jan 31, 2014 @shellcodes_coder 1.5 Billion using Windows think differently. Sorry, but I cant use an iPad to get work done. flagshare7likereply Mark0 - Technologist Jan 31, 2014 @Mr. Dee @shellcodes_coderWhile Ill agree with that statement, the rest of the worlds population that does not need/require a Windows powered computer for work are no longer buying anything with Microsoft loaded on it. (and many that may use a MS powered product for work purchase non-Microsoft products for home/mobile use) The world at large is no longer drinking the upgrade Koolaid and having to replace ALL their devices because of lack of driver/software support for old devices under newer versions of Windows. I still own a laptop with WIN98/Office97 installed - still functional today. The latest spike in PC sales is likely due to the PC refreshes from corporate holdouts that were still running on XP. Once that Gravy train dries up PC sales will continue to decline until theres only genuine complete PC failures and a trickle of new installs. The Gates+Balmer regime is what created the monopoly and attitude that the majority of the world hates. Now that there are viable other options outside of applications locked to the Windows platform, most consumers are voting with their pocket books on anything BUT a Microsoft product. Good riddance. flagshare5likereply shellcodes_coder Jan 31, 2014 @Mark0 - Technologist @Mr. Dee @shellcodes_coder +1 flagsharelikereply u08057012 Jan 31, 2014 @Mr. Dee -- I use my iPad everyday to get work done- maybe you need to quit saying you cant and figure out how to use it..... flagshare3likereply kaibelf Jan 31, 2014 @Mr. Dee @shellcodes_coder I suppose you live in a world without things like Linux and Google docs? Not everything is about the iPad. flagsharelikereply MargonTheGodless 18 hours ago @Mr. Dee @shellcodes_coderSorry, but I cant use an iPad to get work done. or a surface... or any computer running windows 8... flagsharelikereply juan_trujillo Jan 31, 2014 @shellcodes_coder Dont feed this bubble head troll flagsharelikereply Seaspray0 22 hours ago @shellcodes_coder Youve been claiming Microsoft is dead for years. Michael Dell made that claim against Apple years ago. But Apples profits at the time were non-existent along with their sales. Even then, Apple turned it around. Lets see, Microsofts sales and profits are quite health, they hold a dominance in the marketplace, new products are gaining traction, theyre replacing a CEO (that you considered the worst thing for them), and you think theyre dead? Are you really that stupid? flagshare3likereply t8 15 hours ago @Seaspray0 @shellcodes_coder Microsoft is all about supporting legacy stuff which is still very big. But they are not carving out the future like Google or Apple. flagsharelikereply justanameahh Jan 31, 2014 not too bad of a choice! Though, I think the website Bing need to be changed, its a really good search engine and all, but I just dont like how it is sound, how about ding? flagshare1likereply RoscoeTSC Jan 31, 2014 If he is uncomfortable reversing decisions of Gates and Ballmer who elses decisions is he going to be uncomfortable with reversing? If he is uncomfortable working with Bill Gates, maybe, he should excuse himself from consideration. flagshare2likereply gzjr Jan 31, 2014 @RoscoeTSC Any person would be uncomfortable with it, its human nature. Youre pretty much telling the chairman of the board that hes wrong and youre right. Yes, it might sound easy on paper, but actually doing it is a different matter. flagshare4likereply perryrants Jan 31, 2014 so the guy responsible for finding the next ceo gets to be the chairman? oh, how not ethical flagshare2likereply zyxxy Jan 31, 2014 @perryrants In what way? flagshare1likereply dennisfawcett Jan 31, 2014 GOdot. This is the company that is trying to force desktop users to work in a glorified phone OS environment. This is the company whose focus testing told them no one actually used the Start button so they got rid of it. They are arrogant, clueless and they DO NOT LISTEN to customers. flagshare3likereply nicolas18-2009 Jan 31, 2014 @MitchellVII You know what I really cant stand? People who make up facts just to support their views. Now, anyone can like or dislike Windows 8, Im fine with it. But, saying that This is the company whose focus testing told them no one actually used the Start button so they got rid of it. is bulls**t. As widely reported when Windows 8 was in development, Microsoft introduced the Start screen because they thought it would be faster to navigate than the current Start menu and its multiple folders and subfolders. Again, love it or hate, thats fine. But dont make up stuff just to get people to agree with you. flagshare6likereply Fdhealy54 Jan 31, 2014 @nicolas18-2009@MitchellVIIWell... I seem to remember MS saying their focus groups saying that people did not use the Start Button. Microsoft claims it took the controversial decision to remove the Start button from the traditional Windows desktop because people had stopped using it. Slashdot. flagshare5likereply MitchellVII Jan 31, 2014 @nicolas18-2009@MitchellVII Yes, this is a well known fact that focus groups told MS they did not use the Start Button. Surprised you did not know that. I dont know who MS focus groups but I am guessing its the same people who thought the Zune was a great design. As for me, I use it constantly. Nic you can apologize anytime you like :-) flagshare3likereply Silent Cid Jan 31, 2014 @MitchellVII At first I didnt like Windows 8. When Windows 8.1 beta came out I tried it again and liked it. The Start screen when I customized mine isnt as bad as one thinks. I only put things on there I want and take out the rest. Going to it seems quicker than the start menu as I can identify the icons. flagshare4likereply AsokAsus Jan 31, 2014 @nicolas18-2009 @MitchellVII But, saying that This is the company whose focus testing told them no one actually used the Start button so they got rid of it. is bulls**t. No its not. Microsoft actually DID try to justify their removal of the Start Menu by claiming that statistics returned by the the massive myriad of Microsoft spyware (metrics they call it) installed on Windows system PROVED that almost no one used the Start Menu and that justified its removal. flagsharelikereply Show More Comments Add Your Comment Featured Posts Thumbnail image of Best Buy slashes price of Surface Pro by $400 Best Buy slashes price of Surface Pro by $400 Microsoft Thumbnail image of An Amazon Prime price bump means fist pumps at Netflix An Amazon Prime price bump means fist pumps at Netflix Internet & Media Thumbnail image of Earthlings unite to confront the asteroid menace Earthlings unite to confront the asteroid menace Crave Thumbnail image of Discless Xbox One would be amazing, but too radical a move for Microsoft Discless Xbox One would be amazing, but too radical a move for Microsoft Microsoft Thumbnail image of Will Lenovo kill the low-cost Moto X and Moto G?
