sala salapu * UK encouraged by the support from UNHRC members for resolution on Sri Lanka Wed, Mar 26, 2014, 11:34 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka. Mar 26, London: The United Kingdom, one of the co-sponsors of the resolution against Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, said it is encouraged by the support for the resolution nut will continue to press hard until the voting for the resolution takes place later this week. We have been encouraged by the responses, but will continue to press hard for support right up until the vote takes place. We are taking nothing for granted. the British Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) Hugo Swire said during Tuesdays House of Commons debate on the Tamil issue. Speaking at the end of the debate session, the MP said the UK has been working extremely closely with non-governmental organizations and other interested groups and listening to their views and aspirations. Conservative MP Lee Scott emphasized the need for a comprehensive international investigation since the Sri Lankan government is not planning to conduct a one and called on the UK to put forward as tough a resolution as is humanly possible in Geneva. He said an investigation should also include alleged crimes committed after 2009 as well. Conservative MP Bob Blackman however argued that the aim of the resolution is to build the biggest and broadest coalition of world support for whatever measure is passed, rather than a narrow base. By necessity, that means being forced to compromise on some of the wording in order to achieve a worldwide position, but hopefully we will bring all powers into the decision-making process and so increase the pressure on Sri Lanka for a proper resolution of the situation there, the MP explained. Addressing the assembly, Swire said the UK is determined to win the Councils vote and the Prime Minister on 21 March led a call for European Council conclusions that put the EUs full support behind the resolution. The time has come for a genuinely credible investigation with an international dimension to assess once and for all what went on. It will only help all the people of Sri Lanka move forward, the British Minister said. The UNHRC is expected to vote on the draft resolution HRC25 Promoting reconciliation, accountability and human rights in Sri Lanka later this week.
