stepping away from my political rant box (for noe... maybe, well see...) todays message, Crime & Punishment... Are you aware that we lead the world at incarcerating our own citizens? That is a sad thing... but what really ticks me off, is that that means WE, the tax paying populace of the united states, are paying for their room and board with no gain... the people who brought you a kinder gentler, no death sentence, long term stay prison system are folk who arent paying taxes... Now back in the day, criminals that were too dangerous to be rehabilitated or refused to stop, were removed from burdening society. Those who could be, were taught new skills, so when they got out of prison, they had skills to find legal employment. If nothing else, they government employed them as general workers until they found a job. But here comes the new way of thinking... Kill 23 people... 25 years to life... kill 1 person by accident, you guessed it, 25 to life...and neither pays for anything again... easy life... not really, but WAY better than they deserve, and as I pointed out there is no balance to the system... and explain to me how a person can serve multiple life sentences? What value are you to the rest of society that we should pay for your upkeep the rest of your life AND pay for your burial... meanwhile, they tie the court system up with repeated cases trying to find a rookie prosecutor that will make that critical mistake so his defender can exploit it... I find this appalling... save the money for the savable has sending a child to the corner for a time out ever really taught them anything other than dont get caught...? I propose reinstating the death penalty for more than one life sentence criminals (they will never get out of prison, think of it as a mercy), And so we can recoup some of the costs and maybe give something back the the people who were damaged by their crime, we Auction off, say, on EBAY or something, the right to be on the firing squad/push the button/... though a firing squad you can take the top 5 or 6 bidders, but always leave 1 slot for the victim if they want... still 1 bullet and the rest blanks, but you need to have them qualify first... we dont want needless suffering (maybe). Can you imagine how many people would bid to feel they took a hideous criminal out of society? OK it is a little dark, but dammit, we are running out of prisons and if we reinstated work gangs, they might become useful to the system instead of a cancerous burden... Ok, I know I am gonna take a lot of heat for this, but no one else is voicing any better ideas...so this is kinda devils advocate view, lets come up with something that meets the majority of useful criteria...
