this song is called ow. i called it that cos the first line is i bit my tounge, while eating an apple.... hence the ‘OW’. i thought that was pretty cool. and yet lame, which is totally my favourite kind of cool. anyway, i just wanna write some stuff about it cos i enjoy reading about songs, so maybe someone out there might enjoy this also. and this song is easily linked to cos it has a little video. yay! when ow was first recorded it was just acoustic guitar, vocals, drums and keys near the end. i took my laptop and recording gear round to Tom’s for him to colour in my recordings with electric guitar. he also recorded tambourine on this song and singing saw elsewhere on the album. he’s an amazing guitarist. it totally made the song something completely different. it started with the solo at 1:57, then he played rhythm all throughout, and did a crazy extended freakout from 2.40 til the end of the song, which is buried very low in the mix. i didn’t expect it to go where it did, the original draft is much simpler, and even has ukulele in it. but that’s the fun of collaborating, stuff can end up completely different when lots of brains work on it. Davey played bass. freakin bass genius Davey with his 5 string beauty bass. he always played great stuff. sometimes i sang him a riff, or gave him pointers which i don’t think were very helpful, like ‘play something more trippy Dave’. but he usually knew what i meant. and the bass line in the second half of this song turned out to be so very groovy, which is exactly what i was looking for. i think that’s probably what i meant by trippy. love dat bass. hmm, what else. it’s nice when the piano chords come in at 2.58. somehow it sounds like there’s crazy delay on it, but i don’t recall ever putting any on it. one of those weird things that happened to sound that way when everything came together perhaps. ooh my favourite part is the flute at 3.23. tylor wrote that riff. it’s so killer. i was singing that part for days. the drums come in on a weird beat, cos i cut the drum recording up while just mucking around with it and it sounded rad. i was recording the drums, and i played till the end of the song, then kept playing the beat you hear after the main part of the song finishes. i was just playing for fun while it was recording, then i decided i liked it as part of the song. so i played organ over it, and Davey added some simple bass, then Tylor and I wrote the flute jam over the top. there’s like 6 flute tracks. totally influenced by Sufjan Stevens and his epic synth flute army on ‘Age of Adz’. then i stuck in a little windchime to kinda stick the two parts together. i got onto windchimes after listening to a musician called Mutual Benefit, he uses windchimes and bells alot (at the start of ‘Strong River’ and randomly all throughout the album. it’s called ‘Love’s Crushing Diamond’ and it’s so nice. check it out yeah!) my old friend Liam added a little somethin somethin in this song too. it’s the egg shaker that comes in at 3.18. i was just showing him the song, and his idea was to change the beat up a little bit for the different part. i love it. something similar happens in ‘Bros’ by Panda Bear, at 3.18. oh and i think the lyrics are fairly self explanatory. something along the lines of someone crushing on someone, feeling intense about it, realising it’s all good if it doesn’t work out... love happens. i do enjoy the line at the end though. a rather wholesome and optimistic way to look at the world i think. love for everyone. hehe. why not, ayyyyyyy also, the lyrics were an exercise in not bothering to make any of the lines rhyme, and i think it turned out pretty well. i do enjoy rhymes though, it kinda makes the melodies fit together nicer. Nick Cave on ‘Push The Sky Away’ (‘Jubilee Street’ in particular) influenced the non rhyming idea. he just busts out sick stories over the music, what a guy. there ya go. some words about a song. hope you liked it. happy 2015 - kirby
